ARRRGGH....
the plan has hit a bit of a snag....
one of the quad cores arrived today....
put it in the spage chassis. and th thing won't post correctly. the bios identifies the chip correctly but the bios comes up with an "unsupported CPU configuration" error even though I've got the bios from the dell site that supports 53xx processors......
however on the side of the CPU box it states in big letters....
supports dual processing only....
so hopefully everything shopuld work fine when the second cpu arrives on monday....
either that or I'm buying a dual xeon mobo & EATX case on tuesday!
oh well.... did get the cpus dirt cheap £315 compared to £475 each.... _________________ Oh, it's blessed are the meek!, Well I'm glad they'll get something as they have a hell of a time!

Still waiting on the other quad to arrive, but I suppose the flip side is that if I have to get the thing working on a new mobo rather than the Dell box, I'll get an ATX workstation board , now that'll be a cool desktop PC!!
I've found a nice mobo from supermicro that's quite cheap from newegg , but I can't find it anywhere on sale in the UK and just found out that newegg doesn't ship internationally.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813182101
might contact supermicro directly

OK damn Dell ........
it seems they have something in their bioses that detects "Retail processors" and so doesn't allow the system to boot....
so that's it as far as my buy one get one free scheme goes...... I can hear you all laughing now, especially Sir Papa Smurf...
so now moving on to plan B (or is that C, I dunno now) which is buying a mobo and case.....
I'm looking at the following
mobo
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=463714
case
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=163390
a little more expensive compared to £125 for two proprietry heatsinks, but hey that's an 8 way games machine!!!!

Are you sure that 2 gigs of ram is enough? My Barton runs with that.

i'm taking a calulated risk on the ram front....
it'll give about 200meg per core after taking out XP's requirements... and the only app out there that needs more is climate prediction... so as long as I carefully pick the projects I should be OK
currently with 8 seti shrubs running it's only using 525mb of physical ram.....

Is that with Chicken's optimized Apps?
Can you post a link to it, I am sure some of us would love to see the power. _________________ Watch the movie about me The 4-1-4s: The Original Teenage Hackers (It is only about 12 minutes long.)

yep, I'm using Chicken's apps, but interestingly I'm not getting as good an improvement compared to my 5120 machine.
Dunno why, probably some setting somewhere I haven't discovered..all the benchmarks seem OK So I might have got a low credit set of WU's . I'll keep my eye on though....

all the aborts are where I've reinstalled several versions of Chickens app

Interesting, I thought the 5320s were on-par with the E6400. But based on those benchmarks it's slightly less powerful. Of course, benchmarks aren't everything. With a tiny overclock the XP 3000+ in my farm has the highest single-core grunt of all my machines, including the E6400s, but they outrun it on the same project. <shrug> _________________
